She of the Steel Gaze;
In nine days my country goes to cast ballots
In the ancient ritual You taught to Your city.
Our system is broken.
Hateful betrayers of Your sacred trust hold power,
As they have for many years now.
We elected them because we trusted them,
They have prorogued our Parliament,
Ignored Parliamentary rulings,
Corrupted our electoral system,
Gerrymandered democratic ridings,
Taken the rights of our expatriates,
Denied voting access to the disabled, the young, and the poor,
So as to spoil ballots.
They have lied continually to us,
Stolen our money and our future,
Denied basic rights to our citizens,
Reduced the rights of women
And of people of non-conforming gender,
Oppressed our poor and disenfranchised,
Broken the unity of our labourers,
Spit upon the sanctity and sovereignty of the earth,
And deprived us of the right to speak against them;
All to better serve their Corporate Masters.
Lady of Wisdom, You see more clearly than I do,
But I see all that You stand for being suborned.
I implore You; give us back our nation!
Strike these betrayers down!
Cast them from the lofty seat they have stolen!
Make our voices count!
Give us back the gift that You gave us
That we may once again govern ourselves,
Instead of being ruled over by Corporatist lackeys.
May Your steel gaze fall upon these corruptors with wrath!
May You look upon us with favour!
Help us to take back what was stolen
Without the shedding of innocent blood.
Send Your Owl to give Sight and Wisdom
Call upon any friends You have
Among the Sacred Spirits of our First Peoples
If only this once.
Draw Your Aegis over us!
Give us back our Canada!
I shall cast my ballot in honour of You.
I shall ask all who know me to do the same.
Praise be to the Lady of Wisdom!
Praise be to the Grey-Eyed One!
Firearms. Guns. The words by themselves are laden with baggage and narratives, and they have played a part in election campaigns and Canadian politics in a serious role since 1991. The topic remains a hot button one throughout the entire spectrum of political landscape of Canada. The big problem is that very few people in Canada outside of the firearms community actually know much about firearms laws and the procedures and limitations they entail. It’s similar to how citizens may be unfamiliar with family law or corporate law; if you don’t interact with it, odds are, you’re not going to spend hours learning about it. So, with that in mind, this post should shed some light on things.
By Sable Aradia (reblogged from Gods & Radicals): It’s a strange footnote of history. Something happened in World War II that doesn’t really make any sense, and nobody really seems to give a lot of thought as to why it happened outside of military academies. Germany never invaded Britain.
You know, Activism is like writing. Sort of. At least for me they have something in common. They both get points across. They are both forms of communication. They are vastly different as well. One I love doing and the other, not so much. Guess which one is which.
I was supposed to write an article for Winding Widdershins, ages ago. I started it and restarted and still couldn’t come up with anything. It’s not that my experiences are not page worthy. It’s, how do I even begin to share all the things I am learning? How do I begin to share all the things I didn’t know? That’s the tough one. So, I decided to Start. Yeah, not even “start small”. Just Start.
I am Sparrow and I live on Burnaby Mountain. You may have heard of it. If you haven’t, I suggest you look it up. It’s the place that began a movement. It is the place that my life changed forever and I am so lucky to live on the South face of this little but LARGE Mountain.
I live here with the love of my life, Mojo. He is a beautiful, magical man, and he makes what I do just that much for fun and easy. We are Wiccan and have a coven together. He is a Shaman as well. I guess we both do a sort of Shamanic work. He heals souls and I heal the Earth. Same same but different. We have three fur-babies. Murphy OdinDog, Erebus (a gorgeous black cat) and his beautiful silky sister, Nyx.
This Activism path is new to me. Extremely new. November 20, 2014 was a day that changed everything about my life. It changed the way I think. It changed the way I feel. It changed the way people look at me. It changed Me.
That day I was arrested. I was arrested for standing up for what I believe in. I believe that this Earth is our Mother. She has given us everything we need to survive and to thrive. She has given us sacred life giving water. Water is the resource. It is the one resource that none of us can live without. We need to protect our sacred waters with every fiber of our beings, otherwise, we are doomed. The language may seem dramatic, but so is the consequence for not doing this difficult but rewarding work. I believe that all beings are equal. I believe in Social Justice.
That fateful day was the day that Kinder Morgan brought in their drill to test the mountain. They would like to put a pipeline through our Mountain. This mountain is right beside, and by right beside, I mean it touches the Pacific Ocean. There is already an aging pipeline on Burnaby Mountain. Kinder Morgan wants to twin that pipeline so they can triple the shipment of bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands to China, through our Sacred Salish waters. This cannot happen. I will share more of this battle in future installments.
Our Mother, the Earth connected with me in a way that to this day I cannot explain. She didn’t say anything in a spoken language. What She shared with me She shared on some deep cellular level that I cannot even begin to understand. What I will attempt to do, for my part on Winding Widdershins, is to share with you the reader my experiences, what I learn, what I struggle with, and ways that you can be an Activist as well.
What I’ve attempted here is a short introduction into who I am and what I do. Thanks for joining us here.
A cavern. In the middle, a boiling cauldron.
Thunder. Enter the three Witches
Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
Thrice and once the hedge-pig whined.
HARPER cries ‘Tis time, ’tis time.
Round about the cauldron go; In the poison’d entrails throw. Toad, that under cold stone Days and nights has thirty-one Swelter’d venom sleeping got, Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot.
Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting, Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf, Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark, Root of hemlock digg’d i’ the dark, Liver of blaspheming Jew, Gall of goat, and slips of yew Silver’d in the moon’s eclipse, Nose of Turk and Tartar’s lips, Finger of birth-strangled babe Ditch-deliver’d by a drab, Make the gruel thick and slab: Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron, For the ingredients of our cauldron.
Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon’s blood, Then the charm is firm and good.
We are the Witches Three. We are serving up a witches’ brew of information, thought and action. We are united in our purpose: to share with Canadians in general, and Canadian Pagans in particular, things that they need to know about what big corporations are doing to manipulate our democratic process, bleed our citizens into abject poverty, destroy our civil liberties, and rape our beautiful Canadian landscape for profit. Three is the number of fate, the number of transformation, and we three have gathered to stir the cauldron of transformation and change. We have been called. It is time. And our coven does not consist of us three alone. Call out the Wild Hunt to scour the land!

Sparrow Anderson is a Wiccan Witch living on Burnaby Mountain, in British Columbia, Canada. Sparrow is not only a witch, she is a Mother, Partner, Podcaster and Activist (just to name a few hats) but NOT a terrorist. In November 2015, Sparrow became involved with The Burnaby Mountain Caretakers and became an “insta-activist” and Eco-Warrior. Just moments before her arrest, the Mountain and Sparrow connected in a way that Sparrow still cannot explain in words half a year later. She believes that water is THE vital resource and we have to protect it at all costs if we want a future we can recognize. You can find Sparrow at The Wigglian Way podcast, as a contributor at www.settlersinfo.org and also the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stop-Kinder-Morgan-Caretakers-Of-The-Mountain/1508198892753283?fref=ts You can also find Sparrow in the flesh walking and playing the trails and parks of Metro Vancouver with the love of her life Mojo and their 15 year old pup, Murphy OdinDog.
Sable Aradia (Diane Morrison) is not really an activist, but Bill C-51 was a deal-breaker for her. Sable has been a traditional witch most of her life, and she is also a licensed Wiccan minister and an initiated High Priestess in the Star Sapphire Wiccan tradition. As a Pagan author (“The Witch’s Eight Paths of Power: A Complete Course in Magick and Witchcraft“; Red Wheel/Weiser, 2014) and a professional Pagan blogger (“Between the Shadows: the Craft of a Liminal Witch” at the Patheos Pagan channel and “49 Degrees: Canadian Pagan Perspectives” at PaganSquare) she believes that magic can be a powerful tool for social change. She supports equality, freedom, feminism and environmentalism, as she believes these ethics flow naturally from the Charge of the Goddess. She lives with her partners and furbabies in a cabin on the edge of the woods in Vernon, BC. For more information: http://www.sablearadia.com.
