Activism is Like Writing

SparrowYou know, Activism is like writing. Sort of. At least for me they have something in common. They both get points across. They are both forms of communication. They are vastly different as well. One I love doing and the other, not so much. Guess which one is which.

I was supposed to write an article for Winding Widdershins, ages ago. I started it and restarted and still couldn’t come up with anything. It’s not that my experiences are not page worthy. It’s, how do I even begin to share all the things I am learning? How do I begin to share all the things I didn’t know? That’s the tough one. So, I decided to Start. Yeah, not even “start small”. Just Start.

I am Sparrow and I live on Burnaby Mountain. You may have heard of it. If you haven’t, I suggest you look it up. It’s the place that began a movement. It is the place that my life changed forever and I am so lucky to live on the South face of this little but LARGE Mountain.

I live here with the love of my life, Mojo. He is a beautiful, magical man, and he makes what I do just that much for fun and easy. We are Wiccan and have a coven together. He is a Shaman as well. I guess we both do a sort of Shamanic work. He heals souls and I heal the Earth. Same same but different. We have three fur-babies. Murphy OdinDog, Erebus (a gorgeous black cat) and his beautiful silky sister, Nyx.

This Activism path is new to me. Extremely new. November 20, 2014 was a day that changed everything about my life. It changed the way I think. It changed the way I feel. It changed the way people look at me. It changed Me.

That day I was arrested. I was arrested for standing up for what I believe in. I believe that this Earth is our Mother. She has given us everything we need to survive and to thrive. She has given us sacred life giving water. Water is the resource. It is the one resource that none of us can live without. We need to protect our sacred waters with every fiber of our beings, otherwise, we are doomed. The language may seem dramatic, but so is the consequence for not doing this difficult but rewarding work. I believe that all beings are equal. I believe in Social Justice.

That fateful day was the day that Kinder Morgan brought in their drill to test the mountain. They would like to put a pipeline through our Mountain. This mountain is right beside, and by right beside, I mean it touches the Pacific Ocean. There is already an aging pipeline on Burnaby Mountain. Kinder Morgan wants to twin that pipeline so they can triple the shipment of bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands to China, through our Sacred Salish waters. This cannot happen. I will share more of this battle in future installments.

Our Mother, the Earth connected with me in a way that to this day I cannot explain. She didn’t say anything in a spoken language. What She shared with me She shared on some deep cellular level that I cannot even begin to understand. What I will attempt to do, for my part on Winding Widdershins, is to share with you the reader my experiences, what I learn, what I struggle with, and ways that you can be an Activist as well.

First Witch

Thrice and once the hedge-pig whined.

Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf, Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark, Root of hemlock digg’d i’ the dark, Liver of blaspheming Jew, Gall of goat, and slips of yew Silver’d in the moon’s eclipse, Nose of Turk and Tartar’s lips, Finger of birth-strangled babe Ditch-deliver’d by a drab, Make the gruel thick and slab: Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron, For the ingredients of our cauldron.

Second Witch

Cool it with a baboon’s blood, Then the charm is firm and good.

We are the Witches Three.  We are serving up a witches’ brew of information, thought and action.  We are united in our purpose: to share with Canadians in general, and Canadian Pagans in particular, things that they need to know about what big corporations are doing to manipulate our democratic process, bleed our citizens into abject poverty, destroy our civil liberties, and rape our beautiful Canadian landscape for profit.  Three is the number of fate, the number of transformation, and we three have gathered to stir the cauldron of transformation and change.  We have been called.  It is time.  And our coven does not consist of us three alone.  Call out the Wild Hunt to scour the land!

SparrowSparrow Anderson is a Wiccan Witch living on Burnaby Mountain, in British Columbia, Canada. Why Winding Widdershins?

This is a blog about politics.  It’s a blog specifically about Canadian politics.  And it’s written by several Pagan authors so it’s politics from a Pagan perspective.  It’s decidedly left; hence the “widdershins” in the name.

Why did I organize it?  The answer is that I’m becoming increasingly frustrated by the current political climate in our country.  For the past several elections a group that is only supported by a small minority of the country continues to get elected because the rest of us either don’t understand what’s going on, don’t care, or don’t vote because we somehow believe that refusing to participate in the process makes us separate from it.  That would be nice but it’s simply not the case.

I’ve managed to convince a team of Canadian Pagans who are relatively well known in certain small groups to participate in this project.  Each of us has a slightly different focus and perspective and we’ll be blogging or v-logging from our own individual soapboxes.    We thought that maybe if we combined our efforts people would be more likely to listen than if any of us spoke alone.

We will cover Canadian provincial and federal politics, municipal and world politics as they relate to the overall picture, economics, culture, religion and art.  We are not political scientists or economists.  We are laypeople, writing to other laypeople.  We are Pagans of various stripes, writing to other Pagans and the “spiritual, not religious” among us.  We hope you’ll join us in our journey and think about what we have to say when you go to the polls.

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be welcoming and profiling our authors and publishing their occasional commentary on current events.
